Québec City
We visitied Québec City with friends in the fall of 2008 during its 400th anniversary celebration. The Chateau Frontenac is iconic -- thus several photos were dedicated to capturing that site from various perspectives. We found the city vibrant and exciting. I made a special effort to photograph with tripod after dark; it was well worth the effort. Walled Québec City is the most European urban center in North America. And anyone with a penchant for observing colonial history, especially the French & Indian War, will find Québec City a treasure trove. Notably, visiting the Citadelle and walking the Plains of Abraham will bring to life the events of 1759.
History aside, exploring the narrow, cobbled streets of both the Upper and Lower Townes, enjoying the scenic visitas of the Laurentians and the St. Lawrence River, as well as partaking of the gustatory delights found everywhere, make contemporary Québec City worthy of a visit. Québec City should consume about three or four days of your time, at the very least. Take guided tours, go to museums, eat in great restaurants, and then return again during Winter Carnival.
And, oh yes, Montmorency Falls, just downriver, is higher than Niagara and well worth the brief effort required. Also explore rustic Ile d'Orléans if you can add another day.
