A Paul Loucks  > Travel > Vatican City State
The addition of Vatican City to our group's agenda was an optional activity. It was well worth the additional expense. Vatican City and its museums are iconic. The museum itself, according to one Website, indicated that the Vatican's museums are rated third among the top sixteen in the world. Needless to say, Vatican City by itself is a highly acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site. The day we visited (in mid-October) was very warm and in the mid-80's.

The art treasures there are extraordinary, and they extend far beyond traditional Cathollic icons. That said, the Basilica and La Pieta within are great treasures. I would say, unequivocally, that this unique, separate City State not part of the City of Rome, should be at the top of anyone's list when visiting Italy's capital.

I am not a Catholic; but visiting the Vatican was an event that vastly enlarged my respect for this whole religious institution -- putting aside the pedophilia debacle. I have enlarged my perspective and was overwhelmed by the concentration of centuries of acquired wealth that have accrued to the Church. Please overlook any predjudices relating to the scandal and make a point of visiting the Vatican. You will not be disappointed! Enjoy.

This amazing medieval tapestry conveys a visit by the Wisemen to the infant Jesus.
Tapestry depicting ceremony of installing a new pope.
Tapestry of Jesus throwing back the stone from his tomb.
Jesus at lunch with companions. A unique feature of this tapestry is that the perspectlve of the table follows the passerby. It is an illusion of sorts.
The sculpturer Fichier's Flute Player.
Ceiling fresco serving as a transitiion between two wings of the museum.
Gregorious the Illuminator which covers an entire wall comprising at least three levels.
The great nave of St. Peter's Basilica.
Ah, La Pieta. This was a very difficult object to capture since one was required to photograph through thick bullet-proof glass and glare. It was a genuine challenge to my PhotoShop skills.
